Summer Reading Program 2023: Touch a Truck!

The rain held off and we had a successful Touch-a-Truck event last night at the Gordon-Nash for our first Summer Reading Program family event.

Kids visited each vehicle to hear from the driver about how his or her work helps our community. The town's grader and the NHDOT trucks help to keep roadways safe for cars and people. After the Waste Management truck collects trash from the big green WM bins, some of it gets turned into electricity! The police cruiser and the fire truck help with safety in our town. When the fish raised at the fish hatchery have grown, the hatchery truck delivers them to New Hampshire rivers and lakes and lets them free. The tow truck had a big flat bed on the back - long enough to move a disabled car or small truck to a garage for repair. And other big vehicles help with building or repair projects in our community.

Thanks to the following businesses for their vehicles, for their knowledgeable and patient drivers and owners, and for the small gifts to help kids remember this special event.

Love Stories for Little Kids

February is a month for love, so today we read two stories about the subject. The Cow Loves Cookies by Karma Wilson is a story about animals and the foods they love. Doesn't it make you wonder why the Cow loves cookies? We also read my favorite love story, Love Is My Favourite Thing by Emma Chichester Clark, written from the point of view of the author's dog, Plum. It's such a fun story!
At craft time, we fashioned animals or people or scenes using hearts. Cut-out hearts, stick-on hearts,
glittery hearts, plain hearts, all kinds of hearts. Pretty creative!
And look. Someone made a chair for our Pete the Cat. 💙

November Saturday

Lots of fun at the library today as kids and families dropped in to decorate leaves as place cards for their Thanksgiving tables. Won't relatives and friends be surprised to see their names displayed so beautifully? Such variety and imagination shown today - and fun! Happy Thanksgiving!

Spring!

I
think i
t's finally Spring! Those trees that had flowers last week are getting leaves this week! Hooray for Spring!

This week's take-home craft is a flower arrangement on a cup. Each flower is made from two white circles, colored or cut, with a pipe cleaner glued between them. Twisty pipe cleaner stems make the flowers look "Spring-y"! The cup can be decorated using the special-cut paper in the kit. A cute spring arrangement for someone special!

Happy Spring!

Maple Syrup Season

Watching maple syrup being produced is a rite of Spring for kids in our area. If you can't get to a sap house this month, check out the nonfiction and even fiction books we have that show some of the sugaring process.

How is Maple Syrup Made? by Grace Hansen. This title will take readers through the process of bottling maple syrup, starting in Canada where there are lots of maple trees. Readers will learn how maple syrup is gathered, processed, and bottled for them to buy and enjoy on their pancakes. Nonfiction.

Maple Syrup by Lynne M. Stone. Describes one the favorite North American trees that offers one gift after another, including hardwood for building, beauty with its leaves, and a favorite taste, maple syrup. Nonfiction.

Maple Syrup from the Sugarhouse by Laurie Lazzaro Knowlton. Maple syrup season is here! Kelsey and her father begin harvesting sap from sugar maple trees. Join their family and friends in this farm-to-table process of turning sap into maple syrup. Includes maple syrup facts in the back matter to make this perfect for an educational story time. Fiction.

Sugaring by Jessie Haas. Nora wants to find a way to give the horses a special treat for helping her grandfather and her gather sap to make maple syrup. Fiction.

Sugarbush Spring by Marsha Wilson Chall. As winter melts into spring, Rosie and her grandfather collect sap, and then the whole family works through the night to make maple syrup. Fiction.
We also have books about pancakes! Yum!!

Wow! It's Already Week 5!

What a great week we had with activities last week! Many photos are already on the Gordon-Nash Facebook page, and I'll be adding them here a little later on this morning. But, in the meantime, here's the link to the activities for Week 5 - and, if you have some more, keep the photos coming from previous weeks. https://bit.ly/3hZe7lA

Week 4! Here's some more!

Here we are in the last week of July and staring the fourth week of our most unusual Summer Reading Program. If you're just now finding this, jump in this week or on any of the previous weeks and start having fun!
It's great to hear that kids are reading and taking advantage of various ways to get books! Don't forget - if there's a favorite that you're looking for or a book you're anxious to read, let us know and we'll try to make that happen!

Before we get on to Week 4 activities, here's a quick look at some photos from Week 3. It looks like there was lots of fun with bridge-building activities! Some to help the Billy Goats get past the Troll...

and some to support cans of food!

Beautiful painted rocks from this week's Bingo sheet.
A water picture for our Photo Challenge:

And an original poem about summer:
Hamburgers, hot dogs, watermelon, s'mores
Lots of meals to eat outdoors
Unless it pours.
😆

Here's the link to our Week 4 activities: https://bit.ly/302ieqU. This week, there will be opportunities to be better engineers than the those three pigs were! There will be another puppet musical to watch and our Storytime read-aloud will be a different version of the Wolf and Three Pigs story. Be sure to check out the two Bedtime Math posts - one features fascinating physics and the other one is really funny! Cool down yourself and your family with crafty fans. And our writing challenge is to create a song! If you do, send it to me - and I'll sing it for you!

Keep sending in photos for this blog and our Gordon-Nash Library Facebook page.
Keep reading and having fun!
Keep cool!
