It's Autumn!

It's Fall, and here's our new bulletin board - "LEAF" us the name of your favorite children's book! On each leaf is the name of a favorite book as well as the name of the reader who chose it.
Staff favorites are up there, but we have only a few titles from patrons. When you come to the library, ask for a leaf and fill one out so we can add it to the display. If you want to leave us a comment with the name of your favorite book, we can fill out a leaf for you - just don't forget to tell us what color to use for your choice! Happy Fall, y'all!

Local Writers' Science Fiction!

Fourth and fifth Grade writers from the New Hampton Community School have their science fiction work on display at the Gordon-Nash during our "Universe of Stories" Summer Reading Program. In early June, students were challenged to compose an original piece, then illustrate it by drawing a book cover. The last week of school, an assembly was held, with each contributor receiving a certificate for their work and first place prizes of a free book.

Fourth grade writing is on the bulletin board at the landing of the rear staircase. Fifth grade writing can be found in a basket in the periodical section. Please take a few minutes to a look at this creative and imaginative work by our local student writers!

Special thanks to NHCS teachers Melissa Markey and Angie Bergholm for working with us this year and in the past. Thanks to the Friends of the Gordon-Nash Library for sponsoring this program and providing wonderful science books as prizes. Kudos to Gretchen Draper - resident, “Friend”, and teacher-consultant for the National Writing Project in NH - for organizing this yearly collaborative program with our local school.

Guest Reader: Jessica Fligg

Next week, for our Thursday morning Storytime, we will have a special guest reader. New Hampshire artist and author Jessica Fligg, who is displaying her beautiful artwork downstairs in the gallery, will be reading Susie's Painting Adventure and will have a special art activity for the children. Brandi will be there, too! Please come and welcome Jessica Fligg to our library! I'm excited to think about what she will create with the children!

Fifth Grade Book Projects: Caldecott Winners!

For April's project, Mrs. Downing has asked each fifth grader to choose a Caldecott Award winning book, practice it, and read it to a younger class. Mrs. Downing and Mrs. Marcotte can help you find lots of the Caldecott titles in your own NHCS library. But if school is closed or you're looking for something different, come on down to the Gordon Nash Library and look through some of these beautiful picture books that Melanie has displayed for you!

Fifth Grade Book Projects: Mysteries!

NHCS Fifth Graders - it's March and time for a new Book Project for Mrs. Downing! Here at the library, we have on display several of our most recent mysteries - and someone is always available to help you find more! If you would like to use your computer to check on titles from home or school, look in the sidebar (over there --> ) for the link to our online catalog.

Have a good time reading this genre - it's one of my favorites! Hope I see you at the Library!

Fifth Grade Book Projects: Fantasy or SciFi!

NHCS's fifth grade teacher, Karen Downing, has provided The Gordon-Nash Library with a list of the genres of books students are required to read monthly for their "book reports". February's project is a character puppet based on a science fiction or fantasy book. We always provide shelf space for a selection of these monthly books. Here's the display for February. Of course, these are not the only titles we have that are sci-fi or fantasy - there are lots more! If you need help finding the perfect book for your project, just ask a librarian! We're always happy to help you!

The Night Before Christmas

When you visit us, be sure to take a look at the display cases at the back of the library. Featured this month are many different copies of The Night Before Christmas by Clement C. Moore. Each copy displayed is illustrated by a different artist. This collection has been almost forty years in the making and is offered to us this month by a special patron. Ho-ho-ho! Check it out!
