Andy's Book Review: Wild Dolphin Rider

This is the book that the UNH Marine Docents donated to the Gordon-Nash Library when they were here in July and presented their program Whales & Seals. Andy was the first to read this book, and says it's a good story! Here's his review!

Wild Dolphin Rider
by Nancy Donovan
illustrated by Susan Spellman

I like that the boy lives near the ocean. He meets a magical dolphin who takes him on a journey that shows the boy the wonders and dangers of being a dolphin. The boy learns the dolphin should be protected. He goes home. I liked the book. I would recommend this book. Check it out today.

Cayden's Book Review: What Was The Ice Age?

I
read What Was The Ice Age? by Nico Medina, illustrated byDavid Groff. I loved this book. I liked the history in the book, like the part about Snowball Earth. Did you know there was a "Little Ice Age" between 1300 and 1850? I also learned the different stages of human beings.

The Boy Who Failed Show and Tell

This is one of the funniest books I've read in a very long time! It's about a boy named Jordan and his experiences in school during fourth grade (note: this is also the author's name. How do you suppose that happened?)

Here's what the publisher has to say about it:

In a typical school year, every kid has one or two things go wrong. But for Jordan, there's A LOT going wrong ALL THE TIME.
Take this year. Here are some of the thing going wrong:
-- His teacher hates him. Like, really hates him. Like, is totally out to get him even when he's trying to be good, and is willing to fail him on the simplest things, like show and tell.
-- He has a slight breathing problem because of his asthma. And breathing is never really an optional activity.
-- His pet snake has given birth to way, way, way too many baby snakes, all who need a home.

-- He is finding that becoming The World's Best Drummer in no time whatsoever is maybe not the easiest goal.

-- There are bullies ready to stomp him when all he has to defend himself with is a lunchbox.

And all this doesn't even include the freak swing set accident, the fears inside his head, or the funniest class presentation ever.

By keeping his cool (some of the time), banging on the drums (a lot), and keeping his sense of humor (all the time), Jordan's going to try to make it through the year...and grow up to write a book about it!

It's downstairs, in the Juvenile section. If it's already taken out, let me know and I'll save it for YOU!

Twelve Kinds of Ice

Each day I pass this small pond on my road and I always slow down to look. November is my favorite time to watch and, day by day, to wait for the still black water that means ice will form - and it soon does. It's exciting to see it on a frosty morning like today - with the fragile, thin coat of ice that signals winter.

One of my favorite books is about this icy  occurrence. Twelve Kinds of Ice by Maine author Ellen Bryan Obed tells the story of a family of children who watch each year for changes in the ways the ice forms, noting the varying colors and thicknesses as the air gets colder. They name each kind of ice by number and description. The family anxiously awaits the twelfth kind of ice, which sets the stage for a wonderful yearly tradition. Can you guess what that might be?

This little book is in the juvenile section and could probably be read independently by an upper elementary student. But I think it would be lovely as a family read-aloud - chapters are relatively short and could be read quickly or stretched out over several weeks. I'm betting once you begin it, you'll want to read on. It's a simple but beautiful story of a family working together on a common goal as they settle in for the winter season they love.

Happy Reading, and feel free to leave a comment from you or your family below!

Ben's Book Review

Dog Man: Mothering Heights
by Dav Pilkey

This book is very good, I like it a lot!

My favorite part is Chapter 4 when Dog Man transformed into a robot! It's fun, funny and silly.

It has all the same people from Book 1 including the Nurse Lady!

This is why kids should read it! And it is now loved around the world! (Hint: Look at the cover on top of the book title!)
