Summer Reading Program Pirate Kick-Off

Arrghhh!

In one Saturday, close to twenty readers signed up for the "Oceans of Possibilities" Summer Reading Program! They found their pirate names and made pirate headbands, and they took pirate selfies with props. They played games like "Skull & Crossbones Tic-Tac-Toe" and "Pirate Match". They "walked the plank" over shark-infested waters. They followed clues until they found the Treasure Box and they claimed their prizes! They visited with their friends and checked out books to get themselves started on their personalized Summer Reading goals. 

We'll be here again next Saturday, June 25th from 11:30-1:30 for one more opportunity to sign up. If you miss us then, you can of course sign up any time by dropping in or calling during regular library hours. But you'll miss the opportunity to walk, talk, and have fun - like a PIRATE! Hope we see you Saturday!! 

Part 2 - the second Saturday, with more pirate fun and more Summer Reading Program sign-ups!  If you missed these events, stop by anytime to sign up and get your Summer Reading packet!

2022 Summer Reading Program, with Oceans of Possibilities!

We at the Gordon-Nash Library are so excited to offer this year's in-person, Summer Reading Program to area children and families. Our Tuesday evening family programs and our Thursday Storytimes are all ocean or water-themed. We have reading logs and stickers so kids can easily track reading progress. Wednesday LEGO time is back, with the addition of a few STEM programs. And we'll be holding an end-of-summer raffle with fabulous prizes generously donated by our local businesses.

OCEANS OF POSSIBILITIES!

Saturday, June 18 or June 25: 11:30-1:30: Kick-off event to SIGN UP for the Oceans of Possibilities Summer Reading Program. Wear your pirate gear, take some pirate selfies, make a pirate craft, pirate games, books, and activities - and maybe some treasure! Pick up reading logs & stickers to track reading progress, and earn a ticket for our end-of-summer raffle with fabulous community-sponsored prizes!

Tuesday Night Family Events 

• June 28: Special Build-a-Bear type workshop, by invitation only, for the first 20 kids to sign up for the Summer Reading Program after June 17. 

• July 5 at 6pm: Movie Night: “Oceans” rated G. Air-conditioned, downstairs at the library.

• July 12 at 6pm: Whales & Seals Storytime, with Hands-On Interactive Experiences Led by Marine Docents From UNH. On the lawn under the maple, across from the library. Bring a blanket and bug spray.

• July 19 at 6:30pm: MiniBoats Across the Ocean: How a student-made boat sailed across the Atlantic (and how to follow other miniboats now at sea!). Presentation with Sheila Adams & Students from Rye Middle School. Downstairs at the library. 

• July 26 at 6:30: Aquatic Critters from The Squam Lakes Science Center. On the lawn under the maple, across from the library. Bring a blanket and bug spray.

• August 2 at 6pm: Movie Night: “The Little Mermaid (Rated G) - the interactive/sing-along version! Air-conditioned, downstairs at the library.

• August 9 at 6:30: Melodious Zach’s Seaside Review. Back by popular demand, Zach Benton with songs, comedy, skits, and friends from the ocean. On the lawn under the maple, across from the library. Bring a blanket and bug spray.

• August 16 at 6:30: Ice Cream Social on the lawn under the maple, across from the library. Bring a blanket and an ice cream topping to share!

Wednesdays: Drop in LEGO or STEM programs from 4-5pm, upstairs in the library.

Thursdays: All-ages Storytime from 10:45-11:45. Ocean-themed stories & a craft & fun with your friends.

Tuesday, July 5th 6-7:30pm
MOVIE NIGHT: Oceans (rated G)

Bring all your kids and start off the Summer Reading Program viewing spectacular footage of the Earth’s oceans and the marine life under the sea. Film will be shown in the air-conditioned community room - please enter through the downstairs entrance. 

Tuesday, July 12th. 6-7pm

WHALES & SEALS

Explore the lives of the whales and seals in our ocean waters. Special Storytime with hands-on science activities and experiments led by volunteers from UNH’s Marine Docent program. On the campus lawn across the street from the library. Bring blankets/chairs, bug spray.  

Tuesday, July 19th, 6:30-7:30pm. 

MINIBOATS ACROSS THE OCEAN

Join Rye NH Middle School students and teacher Sheila Adams as they share their experiences tracking a student-made boat they launched to the sea. These kids and their boat made national news last winter - come and find out why. Also, learn from them how to track the many miniboats that are at sea right now. Program will be held in the community room of the library - please enter through the downstairs entrance.

AQUATIC CRITTERS FROM THE SQUAM LAKES SCIENCE CENTER

Water is essential for life on our planet. From marshes and ponds to lakes and rivers, aquatic communities support an amazing array of life. Join a Science Center naturalist to meet three different live animals who depend on New Hampshire’s waters. Learn about their habitats, adaptations, and populations. On the campus lawn across the street from the library. Bring blankets/chairs, bug spray.

MOVIE NIGHT: The Little Mermaid (rated G)

Interactive scripts and fun props will bring The Little Mermaid to life during a special screening of this movie. Sing along with Ariel as you watch with your family and friends. Film will be shown in the air-conditioned community room - please enter through the downstairs entrance.

ZACH BENTON’S “SEASIDE REVIEW”.

He’s back! Melodious Zach! Sing-along music, comedy, skits, and more from this local talented performer. On the campus lawn across the street from the library. Bring blankets and chairs, bug spray and water.

OUR FINAL CELEBRATION

An ice cream social! We provide the ice cream; you bring a topping to share. Also, bring chairs and bug spray. On the campus lawn across the street from the library, in the shade of the maple tree.

Kings & Queens

 Someone else had a birthday this week. 

So at Storytime, we read three stories with kings and queens in them - one king who built a machine, one who was the queen of her neighborhood, and a one who was king of the jungle.

Then we made crowns, because everybody deserves to have one at some time or another. It was later told that one of us wore the crown all day long, and insisted on wearing it to bed. It was not me, but if I'd had the presence of mind to make one, I probably would have done the same thing.

How do you make the 200 year New Hampton School Bicentennial relevant to kids? It's a BIRTHDAY!

For our special Bicentennial Storytime, we read Clever Jack Takes the Cake by Denise Fleming. It's a story about Jack, a poor but clever boy who finds creative ways to bake a birthday cake for the Princess's birthday. He runs into all sorts of obstacles on his way to deliver the cake to the Royal Party, and his gift does not arrive as planned. But, being the clever person he is, Jack finds a way to make everything right by the time he meets the Princess. 

After the story, we made Birthday Crowns for a craft, colored with crayons and markers and festooned with spangles and pompoms, stars and stickers.

When we were finished, we celebrated with Birthday Cupcakes. Happy Birthday, New Hampton School!
