Flume Award Winner

A few weeks back, teens at Newfound Regional High School and the Gordon-Nash Library voted for the 2014 NH Flume Award, an annual award given at the state level for a recently published Young Adult book. The winner this year was The Fault In Our Stars by John Green.

If you want to read some teen reviews on this book, there are several here. I know many people - adults as well as teens - who have read this book, and most would recommend it!

The Newfound teens who voted for the Flume Award overwhelming chose this book! Ms. Zick at the NRHS Library Media Center reports that every time the the book comes in, it goes out again. Our own copy here has been checked out regularly as well. And it's being released as a film in just a few weeks!

Before you know it, it will be time to vote for the 2015 award! Here are the nominees - we have most of them at the GNL!

Seraphina by Rachel Hartman
The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin
The Selection by Kiera Kass
Ketchup Clouds by Annabel Pitcher
Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell
Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell
Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Saenz
Out of the Easy by Ruta Sepetys
Winger by Andrew Smith
The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey

Flume Award: Time to Vote!

After promoting the nominated books for the last three months, NRHS Library Media Specialist Kerrie Zick tells me the students at Newfound Regional High School are ready to vote for the Flume Award! Here's the display that we placed in the NRHS Library Media Center. I'll go back in a week, collect the ballots, tally them, and then submit the totals to the state in the name of Newfound. I can't wait to see which books NRHS readers choose! I hope it's my favorite! Regardless, I'll post the winner here in a few weeks!

Young Adults at Newfound

Today it was my pleasure to visit Newfound Regional High School to speak with students about the NH Flume Award. This award is given each Spring by the NH state library association to a recently-published Young Adult book. Both nominations of titles and the votes themselves come from NH high-schoolers.

I brought with me handouts, lists, and a QR code associated with the 2014 Flume Award. In the Spring, students in grades 9-12 will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite books from the list of nominees. But my real purpose in visiting was to gather nominees for consideration for the 2015 award.

Students I spoke with were enthusiastic, polite, and well-versed in current Young Adult literature. It was evident they read a lot! Approximately two dozen titles were submitted to the state for award consideration by the students at NRHS.

Thank you to Kerrie Zick, the NRHS's Library Media Center Director, for arranging my visit and to the students at NRHS for giving your time to talk with me. I'm looking forward to going back to NRHS again!
