Today we read about playing and we made a toy to play with! In Five Little Monkeys Play Hide-and-Seek by Eileen Christelow, those little monkeys convince their babysitter, Lulu, to let them play hide-and-seek before bedtime - then Lulu can't find them! That's Not How You Play Soccer, Daddy by Sherry Shahan showed that there is often more than one way to play a game. Our last book, Are You Ready To Play Outside? is an Elephant & Piggie book by Mo Willems- and we love those at Storytime! In this book, Piggie can't wait to play outside in the sunshine - and then it begins to rain!
For our craft, we colored designs on two white circles, then glued them to both sides of a cardboard one. We poked two holes through the center, then threaded them with string and tied the ends. Then the fun began! Loop fingers through both ends of the string, and twist the disk around and around in rapid circles. Once the string is twisted enough, begin to put your hands together, then pull apart quickly. Keep doing it, until the disk begins to spin. The more rhythmic and fast the hands move, the faster the disk will spin. The design will blur and, if you're fast enough, the disk will hum! It takes some practice, but it's fun!
