STEM Saturday: "Gingerbread" Houses

Our final Saturday program of the year featured our traditional GNL holiday event of building "gingerbread" houses. As we have in the past, families used graham crackers to cover the milk carton bases and embellished the houses with edible decorations like cereal and candy.

We even had some impromptu "sandwich" making! Yum!

Christmas Storytime

Our Christmas books for Storytime were Grumpy Badger's Christmas by Paul Bright and Bear Stays Up for Christmas by Karma Wilson. In both stories, lots of woodland animals were getting ready for Christmas!

Our craft was the traditional Gordon-Nash Library Christmas one - an ornament to fill with our choices of some of the shiny and colorful materials we've used this year in our Storytime crafts! We added a glittery gold or silver pipe cleaner hanger and a tag with our names and the date Christmas 2019.

Mine looks beautiful hanging on my Christmas tree - I trust the others do as well!

B-HVS Holiday Celebration

Again this year, I was invited to be a part of today's Holiday Celebration for the students at Bridgewater-Hebron Village School. I brought holiday books from the Gordon-Nash and a few special ones from my personal Christmas collection. Students were able to listen to a read-aloud, draw, color, or browse books on their own. Favorite books were If You Ever Want to Bring a Pirate to Meet Santa, Don't! by Elise Parsley and The LEGO Night Before Christmas illustrated (with LEGO!) by Amanda Brack. Also a hit was The Night Before Christmas illustrated by B-HVS's Administrative Assistant, Mrs. Hunewill, when she was a Newfound third grader.

It was wonderful to see so many of our former Storytime patrons at their school! Thanks to Ms. Connor at B-HVS for inviting the Gordon-Nash to be an important part of this memorable school tradition.

#BuildtoGive

This December in LEGO Club, Mr. Dowal and I challenged kids to make a MOC that would help to give bricks to children who might not necessarily have any. Through a promotion by the folks at LEGO.com, for each MOC photo posted on social media, a LEGO set will be delivered to a child in need somewhere in the world. Our LEGO Club kids made the Christmas ornaments and scenes posted here with the hashtag #BuildtoGive. MOCs will be on display at the library until mid-January.

Trees That Sparkle & Shine

we read this week Mr Willowby's Christmas Tree, a rhyming book by Robert  Barry. It's about a Christmas tree that would almost fit each time it was placed, and the funny things that happened when it was cut to fit. Then we used sparkles to decorate our own paper tree, and worked the small muscles in hands and fingers as we picked up sequins and other glittery things and dabbed glue. We brought our trees home as a decoration for Christmas!

Stars In Our Eyes

At last week's Storytime, we read Henry's Stars by NH author David Elliott, then read (and sang!) Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star by Kate Toms, filling in the words in the rhyming text. Then we decorated and embellished felt stars to bring home and hang. See how they twinkle?
